PSS WinGPC - Frequently Asked Questions

I have a HPLC system and want to do GPC/SEC data processing. What do I need?

You just need PSS WinGPC OEM software which allows you to import data files from many different HPLC software packages (Agilent/HP, Hitachi, Merck, SP, TSP, etc) or the universal AIA/AnDI/CDF and ASCII file import. PSS WinGPC OEM allows to process data and generate GPC/SEC calibrations and reports.

If  many samples have to be analysed, we recommend to use WinGPC Unity and to add PSS instrument control and PSS data acquisition hardware. This ensures that the overlaid injection feature can be used to save 30% of time and eluent.

We plan to add GPC/SEC as a method into our big analytical lab. Will WinGPC grow with our needs?

We are very confident that we can provide what you are looking for. Because this situation is exactly how most of our customers start (one to many situation). PSS WinGPC has been designed to be a vertically scalable product: stating from single instrument/single method to multi instrument/multi method and from local PC installation to LAN/WAN data acquisition to full-scale Client/Server installations.

See Connectivity for more information.

I have many GPC instruments. Can I use all of them with WinGPC?

Sure, no problem. PSS WinGPC has been designed from day one to support multi-instruments, multi-detectors and all GPC methods (copolymers, light scattering, viscometry, etc). WinGPC can be connected to every LC instrument and LC module of any vendor and is able to run up to 16 instruments with 48 detectors simultaneously. WinGPC is also available with LAN data acquisition and in a Client/Server configuration, depending on your needs and local requirements.

Before I buy WinGPC I want to make sure that all my existing instrumentation will work with it. Which vendors does WinGPC support?

WinGPC was designed to support all instruments and modules on the market. PSS WinGPC coexists with any LC component. We connect to even the oldest modules for data capture.

Can we incorporate WinGPC results in our LIMS system?

Sure, this can be done with the standard WinGPC without a problem. Results, operating conditions and all type of graphical information generated by WinGPC can be passed to (virtually) any LIMS using our standard LIMS interface.

The GPC system I run is far away from my office. Can I access the GPC data in the office?

Sure, no problem. If your PC is linked to network (LAN, WAN), access WinGPC data via the network. If not, install WinGPC in your office and we will access your GPC instrument via optical fibers. The distance between your PC and the GPC instrument can be up to 1000 meter. The optical fiber technology we invented will ensure that your data are transmitted without interference and nobody else can access them.

We have a single GPC/SEC instrument which services many users. Can we distribute WinGPC for raw data reprocessing by those users?

Sure. This is part of WinGPC's philosophy. You can install an unlimited number of reprocessing copies (e.g. for each GPC user) in the department. This is even free of charge. The PSS WinGPC license restricts data acquisition copies, but not reprocessing copies. (Note: this is only true if you license the WinGPC Scientific version, but not the reprocessing version (WinGPC OEM software)).

Can I use my existing data acquisition hardware with WinGPC?

Yes, WinGPC will read the raw data files from your existing data system. If you want or need more powerful features (e.g. chromatogram data base, LAN interface), then the PSS data acquisition hardware offers more features for efficient GPC/SEC work.

Can I use my old GPC/SEC data when I change to your WinGPC software?

This should be no problem; PSS WinGPC imports the following file types directly: ASCII (from Apple, DOS and Unix systems), AIA/AnDI, Agilent ChemStation, CDF, Hewlett-Packard ChemStation, Hitachi, Merck, Spectra Physics, TSP and all previous PSS data files. If even ASCII conversion is not possible in your case, we can write a special import filter for you.

We have two GPC instruments which we run only occasionally. Can I use both of them with my single-instrument WinGPC copy?

Yes, if you do not acquire data at the same time from both of them, because the single-instrument WinGPC software supports only a single time-base. You need to add the inject trigger cable from the second instrument to the WinCHROM interface/UDC810 (see the user documentation how to do that). If you want to run two (or more) instruments simultaneously, then upgrade to the multi-instrument version of PSS WinGPC. The software can be dispatched by e-mail and you are ready to go.

We have a multi-language lab. Which languages does WinGPC support?

Currently WinGPC supports English and German. French, Spanish and Italian are in the works. Languages can be changed during a WinGPC session. This will update on the fly the screens, the dialogs, the step-by-step instructions and the help system. WinGPC Reports and printouts will be done in the selected language. International language support is always installed with the initial WinGPC setup.

We have very different samples and need different calibration methods. Which do WinGPC offer?

PSS WinGPC supports all calibration methods used in GPC/SEC today. We offer:

  • conventional calibration with narrow standards
  • universal calibration with Mark-Houwink coefficients
  • broad standards calibration
  • integral broad standards calibration (also called cumulative match)
  • endgroup calibration
  • universal calibration with all existing viscosity detectors
  • calibration with LS detectors
  • heparin calibration acc. to EP

We run a light scattering detector with its own software. Can we use WinGPC with the existing LS detector we have?

Sure. WinGPC was designed from day one to support all instruments on the market. We currently support all types of LS detectors including multi-angle systems like the Wyatt DAWN DSP, DAWN EOS, and MiniDAWN. You will need the WinGPC multi-angle LS software module to have multi-angle LS support.

I upgraded my GPC system with a viscometry (light scattering) detector. What do I have to do to upgrade WinGPC?

Just get the WinGPC viscometry (light scattering) software module. The software can be dispatched by e-mail and you are ready to go. You might need additional AD-converter modules to acquire raw data from the new detector.

How can I measure chemical composition drift with WinGPC?

If you investigate a copolymer by GPC/SEC, you can use different detection signals (e.g. UV and RI) to trace compositional changes due to different responses of the comonomers. The simplest way to see a chemical drift in a sample is to ratio the detector signals. This can be done easily in the WinGPC overlay mode. The result is only qualitative, however. There is no simple way of quantifying the absolute comonomer content without further data processing. If you calibrate you detection signals and upgrade to WinGPC copolymer software module, then you can determine the chemical composition at any time in your chromatogram and see how the comonomer content changes with molar mass.

How can I investigate end group functionality with WinGPC?

Just use two different detector signals (e.g. UV and RI): one of them should preferentially detect the end group. Use the WinGPC overlay mode to compute the relative change of end groups in your samples. In order to obtain the absolute numbers of end groups you will need the WinGPC end group software module.

Is it possible to use the end group of a polymer to measure absolute molar mass?

Yes, certainly. You will need two detectors: one which measures the polymer backbone and the other which detects specifically the end group. The ratio of both signals is proportional to molar mass. If you use the WinGPC end group software module, then the software will do all the number crunching and generate a nice calibration curve without any standards or assumptions.

I have many GPC samples to run. How can I get reproducible results without manually optimizing each analysis?

Use the automation features available in WinGPC Unity. They allow to pick up perfect GPC/SEC results directly from the printer. The WinGPC automation will automatically calibrate, run and analyze the unknown, update the calibration (recalibrate), and use all the optimization tools which are available for manual data processing (internal standard, flow correction, etc). WinGPC supports autosamplers from any vendor, so completely unattended runs are no problem.

Can I determine pore structures in membranes by GPC/SEC?

Yes. GPC/SEC is actually a very convenient and universal method to study the pore structure of membranes by filtration experiments. Use the WinGPC sieve curve wizard to calculate sieve curves, the molar mass cut-off, the selectivity of the membrane, etc. For details see e.g
P. Kilz, M. Viktorin; Quality Control and Advanced Characterization of Membranes; LC/GC Europe 20, April 2007, page 224.

I understand WinGPC has many options, but I need a very special type (in-house) of data treatment. What can WinGPC do for me?

WinGPC was designed as an open system, which allows users to extract and input information without any problems or restrictions. If you are looking for a single-button solution, we can implement your code into WinGPC and make it usable even for non-trained staff.

How can we distribute WinGPC results to our clients?

The options are manifold. The conventional way (and most ineffective) is sending a printout to your client. WinGPC offers more: you can publish results in HTML in your Intranet/Extranet, you can send results by e-mail (as JPG or PDF) or you could even open a result database and your clients can access the data anytime from there without any assistance from you. If you need more company-specific implementations, we can adapt WinGPC to cover your requirements.

What do I need to upgrade to the current WinGPC version?

If you already have a WinGPC license, just order the WinGPC update. All existing equipment and wiring can still be used. The software can be dispatched by e-mail and you are ready to go. If you are currently using a different GPC software, please contact us to find out the best way to upgrade.

I still use WinGPC Version 3, but my old computer died. What do I need to get the current WinGPC release?

Get a new computer with any Windows 32 bit operating system and update to the current WinGPC version. All existing equipment and wiring can still be used. The software can be dispatched by e-mail and you are ready to go.
